There are so many exciting places to visit in Italy throughout the year. One of the most enjoyable places to be in February is Venice. The best in Italian restaurants Orlando, Christini’s Ristorante Italiano offers several of the most authentic Venetian dishes that are savored during Carnevale and during the days leading up to the beginning of Lent.
To travel to Venice, you must be prepared to arrive by boat. Yes, the gondola is the most well-known method of transportation in Venice, a city surrounded by winding and intricate canals that surround an infrastructure of enormous architectural worth. Taking a romantic gondola ride on The Canalazzo (Grand Canal) is the dream of many.
The Piazza San Marco which is located in the heart of Venice boasts the Basilica di San Marco, a magnificent Byzantine structure with a rich history that dates back to approximately 828. The original structure was adjacent to the Doge’s Palace and served as a chapel for the Doge. Intricate mosaic tiling and other amazing sculptures and frescoes adorn this “Church of Gold” and the surrounding grounds.
In February, the Carnevale propels Venice to the top of tourism destinations. Steeped in tradition, there are masquerade balls, parades through the city, and flotillas on the canals. There are children’s carnivals and of course, what would an Italian celebration be without food fairs?
The history of Carnevale seems to have originated in 1162 when the people of Venice were victorious over the reigning patriarch. There was a tremendous social divide in Venice, and it is believed that the wearing of masks was the result of folks hiding their identities out in public so that they could not be identified by the class of society they were a part of. In 1797, the King of Austria, the current ruler of Venice, forbade the celebration of Carnevale. The festival was revived by the Italian government in 1979 as a way to preserve the traditions of the city and to boost tourism. It worked.
The foods of Carnevale are of course regional, featuring Baccalat Mantecata, which is a salted cod dish usually served with polenta. Risi I Bisi (rice with peas) is another favorite. Risotto with seafood and gnocci are amongst some of the other specialties available. Asiago cheese, Valpolicella wine, and Bellini’s are also fan favorites. For those with a sweet tooth, Tiramisu is claimed as one of Venetian origin although disputed by the people of Tuscany.
